L&#8217;auspicata produzione automobilistica era ancora di l\u00e0 da venire. La Patent-Motorwagen costruita su brevetto di Friedrich Lutzmann aveva portato la Opel sulla strada della prima produzione automobilistica e aveva acceso l&#8217;entusiasmo dei fratelli Opel nei confronti di questo nuovo prodotto industriale. Il crescente numero di veicoli circolanti sembrava del resto dar loro ragione: nel 1900 c&#8217;erano gi\u00e0 12.000 automobili nel mondo, 8.500 delle quali nella sola Europa.<\/p>\n<p>Nella Primavera del 1901 i fratelli Carl, Wilhelm e Fritz Opel si recarono pertanto al Salone dell\u2019Automobile di Parigi per osservare da vicino i prodotti della concorrenza e si resero presto conto che la Patent-Motorwagen doveva progredire per tenere il passo con il progresso tecnico. Fino alla fine del 1901 costruirono ancora alcuni esemplari giungendo, complessivamente, al numero di 65 veicoli prodotti a R\u00fcsselsheim nella &#8220;era Lutzmann&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Un nuovo inizio con Alexandre Darracq<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naturalmente i fratelli Opel avevano cercato e trovato a Parigi nuovi contatti. Alla fine si rivolsero ad Alexandre Darracq di Suresnes, un altro dei pionieri dell&#8217;automobile, che, gi\u00e0 noto per la sua propensione alle collaborazioni internazionali, non si fece pregare troppo per affacciarsi sul mercato tedesco con l&#8217;aiuto di Opel. Il contratto prevedeva che gli Opel sarebbero diventati i rappresentanti esclusivi della marca francese in Germania e nell&#8217;Impero Austro-Ungarico e che al tempo stesso avrebbero potuto montare carrozzerie proprie su telai Darracq importati dalla Francia. Un incentivo alla firma venne anche dalla fama guadagnata nelle competizioni dalle Darracq che avevano vinto in Francia molte importanti corse automobilistiche.<\/p>\n<p>Quando, nel dicembre del 1901, il rappresentante di Darracq arriv\u00f2 con la prima automobile a R\u00fcsselsheim, sfidando neve e gelo, i fratelli Opel si convinsero che le Darracq avrebbero portato loro il successo. Con il successivo arrivo dei primi telai e veicoli completi Darracq, i fratelli Opel ebbero finalmente a disposizione quello che occorreva loro per guadagnarsi un posto anche in questo nuovo settore dell&#8217;industria. In particolare, si resero subito conto che un ostacolo al raggiungimento di alti livelli produttivi era rappresentato dalla laboriosa realizzazione delle carrozzerie, ancora fatte a mano ed in legno. Per questo motivo decisero di importare soprattutto gli autotelai. Su uno di questi, dotato di un 4 cilindri di 1.100 cc da 8 CV, fu montata una carrozzeria a 4 posti. Questo modello, venduto ad un prezzo inferiore ai 5.000 Marchi, contribu\u00ec a fare aumentare la produzione Opel-Darracq.<\/p>\n<p>Mentre si montavano le prime Opel-Darracq, Fritz e Wilhelm Opel cercavano di sviluppare una propria vettura attingendo alle conoscenze della tecnologia francese. A questo scopo smontarono, ad esempio, fino all&#8217;ultimo bullone una Darracq 9 HP e la studiarono insieme con i loro tecnici. La prima Opel era in vista.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La prima Opel-Motorwagen<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Una volta sostituiti o modificati i pezzi sui quali era parso necessario e possibile intervenire, fu presentata la prima vera Opel-Motorwagen. Parallelamente fu costruito anche un nuovo bicilindrico di 1.885 cc da 12 CV a 1.200 giri\/minuto che racchiudeva la tecnologia pi\u00f9 avanzata: asse a camme mosso da ingranaggi, radiatore a nido d&#8217;ape con ventilatore, pompa dell&#8217;olio automatica, accensione a batteria. La Opel 10\/12 HP aveva soprattutto un telaio tanto basso da distanziarla finalmente anche in fatto d&#8217;estetica dai veicoli precedenti, ancora simili a carrozze a cavalli.<\/p>\n<p>Questa automobile fu presentata per la prima volta al Salone dell&#8217;Automobile di Amburgo, nell&#8217;Autunno del 1902, per essere venduta per tre anni al prezzo di 6.000 Marchi come Opel-Motorwagen 10\/12 HP.<\/p>\n<p>Solo dieci mesi pi\u00f9 tardi Opel sorprese i contemporanei presentando il suo primo motore a 4 cilindri. Realizzato sistemando due coppie di 2 cilindri una dietro l&#8217;altra. La sua novit\u00e0 pi\u00f9 significativa era la sistemazione delle valvole sul fianco del cilindro: in questo modo era sufficiente un unico asse a camme per far funzionare il meccanismo delle valvole. Una pompa dell&#8217;olio mossa dal motore si occupava invece di fornire l&#8217;esatta quantit\u00e0 di lubrificante, a seconda della velocit\u00e0. La cilindrata derivava ovviamente da quella del bicilindrico originale: con un alesaggio di 100 mm ed una corsa di 120 mm era esattamente di 3.770 cc. La Opel-Motorwagen 20 HP System Darracq non solo offriva prestazioni elevate, ma anche una migliore tenuta di strada grazie ad un telaio dal baricentro molto basso. Per rallentare c&#8217;erano 2 freni a nastro che agivano sull&#8217;assale posteriore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Il divorzio da Alexandre Darracq<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A R\u00fcsselsheim si lavorava attivamente allo studio di quei modelli propri che avrebbero consentito di liberarsi definitivamente dalla dipendenza dalle licenze Darracq. Fu ridotto il numero dei modelli mono-bicilindrici e dal 1904 ci si concentr\u00f2 su quelli a 4 cilindri che erano molto apprezzati dal pubblico. Poich\u00e9 era sempre pi\u00f9 evidente che, chi poteva permettersela, non voleva pi\u00f9 rinunciare all&#8217;automobile, si pens\u00f2 di realizzare un nuovo modello di lusso: nell\u2019Estate del 1904 usc\u00ec la Opel Motorwagen 30\/32 HP System Darracq che costava a partire da 17.000 Marchi. Il prezzo era alto, ma la macchina lo valeva tutto: motore a 4 cilindri di 4.700 cc da 30 CV, doppia accensione, freni a tamburo sulle ruote posteriori. C&#8217;era poi anche una versione leggermente pi\u00f9 piccola che aveva un motore, sempre a 4 cilindri, ma di 3.100 cc di cilindrata da 18 CV.<\/p>\n<p>Quando a R\u00fcsselsheim si resero conto che i modelli di lusso si vendevano sempre meglio, completarono la gamma nel 1905 con la 35\/40 HP di 6.800 cc e l&#8217;anno seguente con la 45\/50 HP di 8 litri che non costava meno di 22.000 Marchi. Questi grandi modelli a 4 cilindri furono anche le prime automobili dotate di serie un cambio a 4 marce.<\/p>\n<p>Nello stesso tempo gli Opel cominciarono a pensare di staccarsi da Alexandre Darracq. Nel 1905 le licenze di produzione e rappresentanza erano state prolungate di altri cinque anni, ma gi\u00e0 nell&#8217;Inverno del 1906 la collaborazione venne interrotta dalla Opel. Apparentemente si era convinti che la propria tecnica fosse ormai cos\u00ec matura da poter fare a meno dell&#8217;aiuto francese. Per quel che riguardava la reputazione, oggi diremmo l&#8217; &#8220;immagine&#8221;, i fratelli Opel se l&#8217;erano assicurata attraverso un&#8217;alta qualit\u00e0, ottime condizioni di garanzia e naturalmente portando il nome della ditta sulla bocca di tutti tramite grandi vittorie sportive.
